While the ability to change the color of surfaces has advanced through the centuries, all color-changing technologies have had common properties: they were comprised of liquids, fibers, or pigments adhered onto something. Once a color had been changed, it took time and money to strip off the old surface and physically apply a new one. 


The game changed in dramatic fashion in January, 2022, when BMW unveiled the world’s first car with a dynamic smart surface.
